Interior Design & Finish Selections for Custom Homes in Louisville, KY
Floors, cabinetry, countertops, lighting, tile, hardware, appliances: a custom home involves hundreds of choices, and each one affects how the home looks, lives, and ages. It's the most personal part of the build, and for many homeowners, it's also the most overwhelming.
At Black Label Builders, we make it manageable. We guide you through every selection in a clear order, with trusted suppliers and a budget you can see, so that the finished home feels cohesive, fits the way you live, and holds up for years to come.
How Our Selections Process Works
-
1. Define Your Style
Most clients arrive with a Pinterest board, a folder of screenshots, or a few homes they love. That's the perfect starting point. We'll look for the common thread in the images you've saved, whether it's warm traditional, clean modern, transitional, or something of your own, and help you put a name to it.
From there, we narrow your inspiration down to a few images that capture the look you want. That becomes the reference point for every material and finish that follows, which keeps the whole house consistent from room to room.
-
2. Set Your Allowances
Before you start picking materials, we establish allowances: a set budget for each category, such as flooring, cabinetry, lighting, and plumbing fixtures. Allowances let you shop with confidence, because you'll always know how a choice compares to your budget before you commit to it.
-
3. Start With the Flooring
We begin with flooring because it covers more of your home than any other finish and sets the tone for everything else. Hardwood, engineered wood, natural stone, tile, polished concrete: each has its own look, cost, durability, and maintenance needs, and we'll walk you through the tradeoffs so you can choose with confidence.
Once your flooring is chosen, we pull samples so we can coordinate cabinetry, paint, and other finishes against the real thing, not a photo on a screen. If you choose hardwood, we'll review species, stains, and plank widths with you to get the tone and texture right.
-
4. Cabinetry, Countertops, and Millwork
Kitchens and baths get the most attention, and the most use. We help you select cabinetry, countertops, and custom millwork that look beautiful and work hard, from the kitchen island to built-ins in the living room and mudroom.
-
5. Lighting, Plumbing Fixtures, and Hardware
These are the details that make a home feel finished. We help you choose lighting, faucets, sinks, tubs, and cabinet and door hardware that match your style and hold up to daily use. We plan lighting alongside your smart home system so controls are designed in, not added later.
-
6. Appliances
We work with trusted suppliers to prepare detailed quotes based on your plans, so you can compare options and see how they fit your budget. We'll help you weigh looks, features, and long-term maintenance, and we confirm that every part needed for installation is on the order, so nothing holds up the schedule.
-
7. Final Review and Ordering
Before construction reaches the finish stage, we review every selection with you, confirm it against your allowances, and place orders early enough to allow for lead times. For key items, we also recommend choosing a backup option in case something is back-ordered or comes in over budget.
What It's Like to Make Selections With Us

- Your budget stays visible. Every selection is tracked against your allowances, so there are no surprises at the end.
- Decisions happen in the right order. A clear selections schedule means you're never rushed, and the build is never waiting on a choice.
- The whole house works together. Because our team also manages design and planning, your finishes are chosen with the layout, lighting, and architecture in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a finish allowance?
An allowance is a set amount in your construction budget for a category of finishes, such as flooring or lighting. If your selections come in under the allowance, you save money. If you choose to upgrade, you'll see the difference before you decide.
Do I need to hire my own interior designer?
No. We guide you through selections as part of your build. If you already work with an interior designer, we're happy to collaborate with them.
When do I make my selections?
Most selections are made during the design phase, before construction begins or early in the build. Deciding early keeps the schedule on track and gives suppliers time to deliver.
What if my choices go over budget?
We'll show you where the overage is and help you decide: adjust a selection, switch to your backup option, or move the budget from another category. You're always in control of the tradeoffs.
